Roof Cleaning/Treatment

One of the many services we provide is roof cleaning. Too often people replace their roof simply based on looks.

Check out our tips and facts below to help you make an intelligent decision when choosing a contractor.

  • What are the Black Streaks on My Roof?
Unsightly black stains or streaks on asphalt shingles are caused by a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. The algae feed on the crushed limestone that is used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing black streaks. The streaks are not only unsightly but cause the shingles to fail prematurely by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat properly, thus possibly raising your utility bills.
  • 50% of Roofs Are Replaced Due To the Way They Look
This is not because of their functionality. Half of the roofs ever replaced in the south-east didn’t need replaced, only cleaned (except for Katrina damage). Just as mold and mildew can grow on your vinyl siding, windblown algae can land and grow on your roof. Replacing your roof because of these algae is like replacing your siding instead of having it cleaned; it just doesn’t make sense. Some roofing contractors don’t know what these black streaks are, saying it’s the asphalt showing through the shingles or that it is water stains. Some contractors may know it’s algae but tell you it can’t be cleaned without damaging the shingles. In either case, they may tell you the roof needs to be replaced. This is not true if your shingles are still in good shape. The algae can be killed and removed properly without damaging the shingles using low pressure chemical solutions (recommended by shingle manufacturers).
  • Signs of Aged Shingles Needing Replaced
We do not recommend cleaning shingles that are in need of being replaced. If you are not sure if your roof needs replaced or cleaned, here are some signs of an aged roof:

    • Brittle or crumbling shingles
    • Excessive amount of shingle granules in your gutters
    • Bottom corners of shingles curled up
    • Wavy, warped, or heavy shingles
    • Very thin or loose shingles

If you are still unsure about the status of your roof, we will be glad to evaluate it for you at no charge.

We will not clean shingles that need to be replaced because cleaning the roof won’t solve the problem if the shingles are aged. On the other hand, if you call a roofing contractor, you may not get the whole truth and may be persuaded into replacing a roof that only needs to be cleaned.

Mildew Removal

Mildew does not go away unless treated

Many times, people choose to have their house or business repainted because of the sight of mildew.  However, surprisingly mildew is not killed when painted over and it will reappear even faster than you may realize.  Ever since lead was removed from paint years ago mildew has become a nuisance.  Understand that painting over this fungus will only delay its symptoms and will not cure the problem.

Don’t spend hundreds or thousands of dollars repainting your house if you have a mildew problem.  You can save a tremendous amount of money simply by having the mildew killed and removed with a good cleaning.

Parks’ Housewashing specializes in mildew removal no matter what kind of surface it may appear on.  Parks’ services will help maintain your paint’s life, and will even help fight mildew long after the wash has been complete.

For a free estimate regarding your mildew problem, or simply have questions please feel free to give us a call or contact us via web. We will respond with you in record time. And the best part about it,  it will cost you NOTHING!
